Taking It To You...

Our church is in the process of buying land to build a building, Lord willing.  We have one more meeting before the city to see if we get the green light.  But in the meantime we have begun to work with engineers and architects, and probably some other people that I am just not aware of.  On Thursday this week I get to sit down with some of the architects and tell them what I would love to have and what we absolutely need.  I have never done this before, so I am a little scared and nervous, because building a building is permanent, so I keep thinking "don't mess this up!"  I have been touring different kids areas in churches the last couple weeks, mainly looking at the area I oversee, check-in and Birth-Age 5.  I have seen some awesome things and some boring rooms.

So while I am compiling my list I thought I would ask you all...most of you are moms and/or most of you attend church, or have been to a church before.  What are some of the things (either your church or another church you have been to) in a children's area that you think are must haves (like structurally, not so much toys), things you couldn't live without at your church, or this is something you really like about your kids area.  I need help and ideas!  So here you go, I am taking it to you all...sound off!

How exciting!!! I am totally no help at all, but I would say just make sure to allow for plenty of growth, because our kids are already overflowing in our kids' room.....of course, you know we just rent a space, so we aren't to the point of building yet. I'm excited for your church though and think that's wonderful!

A nursing mother's room! Findlay First has one and I used it a lot. I really love their whole setup for the kids actually. They have the nursery, then a 2-3s room, a 4-5s room, and then the Power Plant for the bigger kids during church. They have an area in the nursery that is outside the half door that keeps the kids in that is for changing so you can take your kid in to change w/o disturbing anyone. And I like how they have a room that goes off to the side that has a window parents can look thru to see their kids w/o their kids seeing them.

Oh and in the nursing mother's room they have a tv that you could view the sanctuary so you don't miss anything.

i would have loved to have a nursing mother's room that overlooked the sanctuary! the church my hubby works at does have a special room, but it's a huge hike from the sanctuary and you just watch the service on tv. i've seen another church where the room was behind the sanctuary, with a one-way mirror so moms could see out without being looked at, and i'm sure there was an audio feed into the room so they could hear the service clearly.

one thing i love about my church is that it has check-in computers (3 of them) so that parents can check their own kids in via touch screen and it prints their ID stickers off right there, to put on the kids shirt. of course, we go to a church of 3000 members, so obviously that won't be a realistic expense for ALL congregations.
